From the founder: Everyday Maths & Science Knowhow

Free to start. By Dr Alten du Plessis, founder of LearnSmart4Life.

Everyday Maths & Science Knowhow is for anyone who would like the maths and science of ordinary life to make sense: a learner who wants to see where the sums at school turn up at home, a student running a first budget, a parent, or an adult who simply likes knowing how things work.

It offers one small, useful piece of knowhow for every day of the year. Each day explains one everyday thing in plain words, with its source, and then lets you try it on your own situation: your electricity rate, your recipe, your training week. The point is not to memorise a formula but to run the sum with your own numbers and see what it tells you.

Every day has three parts. Learn is a short explanation of one idea. Try it is a small calculator or table that works with your numbers. My tries keeps everything you tried, so you can come back and compare. A year is built from weekly themes, each with a start-here page and a quiz bank. Home & Life covers energy, water, percentages, interest, the till slip and the kitchen; Numbers brings interesting numbers and mental-arithmetic tricks, with timed practice rounds that keep your personal best; Sport takes the body, the physics of the ball, training and the contest by the numbers.

I suggest you begin with the free taster: ten questions from the areas you choose, with the numbers you need in every question, answers and reasons at the end, and nothing stored. Then open week one, Home energy, where the kettle, the geyser, the shower and the little red standby lights become sums you can run on your own home.
